The main objective of the Institute is education and training, empowerment of individuals and social responsibility. In its quest to empower individuals through education; training initiatives to the general public as well as healthcare professionals are implemented on an ongoing basis. The Institute is also actively researching the benefits that Tibb offers with regards to the management and treatment of chronic illnesses.

Objectives:

  • Focusing on the development of Tibb Doctors . Health professionals are trained to diagnose and effectively treat all acute and chronic disorders in a cost-effective, professional and holistic manner.
  • The involvement of health professionals from mid-level workers, therapists and health advisors through to primary healthcare nurses and doctors in intergrative medicine through the use of Tibb.
  • Ongoing research into the effectiveness of Tibb with specific focus on clinical practice in the context of the country's healthcare needs.

Tibb provides the following programmes:

  Tertiary Education


Tertiary education is currently offered through the University of the Western Cape, School of Natural Medicine and is aimed at the development and training of Unani Tibb doctors .

Doctors are qualified via two pathways:

• 5 year Degree in Unani Tibb Medicine
(Bachelor of Complementary Medicine - Unani Tibb)

• Postgraduate Diploma in Unani Tibb
(Dip UTM) - This program is currently under review

• In addition to developing Unani Tibb doctors, it is envisaged that by 2011 an additional tertiary programme will be in place. This is aimed at the development and training of Unani Tibb primary healthcare therapists .   This category of mid level healthcare professionals has been included in the register of Unani Tibb with the Allied Health Professions Council.   The programme will extend over a two year period as a full-time study programme.

 

 


The Lifestyle Advisors Programme is aimed at providing education and training to professionals such as Nurses, Social workers, therapists and other healthcare professionals who want to incorporate the Tibb approach into their current field of expertise. These programmes include workshops run over 2 days as well as self-study modules. The focus is especially on health promotion and chronic illness management from the Tibb perspective.

We are currently applying for accreditation for these programmes through the appropriate SETA's.
